Description
This medication is used alone or with other medications to help prevent
the return of certain abnormally fast heartbeats that are life-threatening
or that cause disabling symptoms (e.g., paroxysmal atrial fibrillation,
paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardias-PSVT, persistent ventricular
tachycardia). Propafenone belongs to a class of drugs known as antidysrhythmics.
It works by blocking the abnormal electrical activity of an abnormal
heartbeat so that the normal heartbeat can occur.
This medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription, in the following dosage form:
Oral
Extended-release tablets (U.S.)
Tablets (U.S. and Canada)
Proper Use of This Medicine
Take this prescription drug exactly as your doctor directs you to do. ALWAYS follow his directions precisely and faithfully.. Do not take more or less of this medicine, and do not take it more often than your doctor ordered.
For patients taking the extended-release capsule form of this medicine
Swallow
capsules whole. Do not crush, break, or chew them.
This medicine may be taken with or without food
Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may increase the effects of propafenone
by increasing the amount of this medicine in the body. You should
not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while you are taking
this medicine.
The medicine will help you the most when there is a constant amount of it in your blood. In order to keep the amount constand, never miss even one dose. Take them at regular and exact intervals. If you must take three doses a day, take them at precixe eight hour intervals.
