Crestor
Oral Uses
Rosuvastatin is an enzyme blocker (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor),
also known as a "statin." It is used along with a proper
diet to help lower fats (triglycerides) and cholesterol in the blood.
This drug is usually prescribed after non-drug treatment options have
not been fully successful at lowering cholesterol (e.g., diet change,
increase in exercise, weight loss if overweight). Reducing cholesterol
and triglycerides help prevent strokes and heart attacks.

Precautions
While Using This Medicine
It is very important that your doctor check your progress at regular
visits. This will allow your doctor to see if the medicine is working
properly to lower your cholesterol and triglyceride levels and to
decide if you should continue to take it.
Check with your doctor immediately if you think that you may be pregnant. HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors may cause birth defects or other problems in the baby if taken during pregnancy.
Before having any kind of surgery (including dental surgery) or emergency treatment, tell the medical doctor or dentist in charge that you are taking this medicine.
Do not use excessive amounts of alcohol while taking rosuvastatin because it can worsen the adverse effects of this medicine on the liver.
Check with your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if it is accompanied by unusual tiredness or fever, because the medicine's adverse effects on muscle can lead to serious kidney problems.
If your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse, check with your doctor.
What
should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking rosuvastatin?
• Do not take this medication if you are allergic to rosuvastatin,
or if you have liver disease.
• Before taking rosuvastatin, tell your doctor if you are allergic
to any drugs, or if you have:
· kidney disease;
· underactive thyroid;
· a muscle disorder;
· epilepsy or other seizure disorder;
· an electrolyte imbalance (such as high or low potassium levels
in your blood);
· a severe infection or illness; or
· if you have had a very recent surgery or medical emergency.
• If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to
use rosuvastatin, or you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests
during treatment.
• In rare cases, rosuvastatin can cause a condition that results
in the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue. This condition can lead
to kidney failure, and may be more likely to occur in older adults
and in people of Asian descent. Call your doctor at once if you have
unexplained muscle pain or tenderness, muscle weakness, fever or flu
symptoms, and dark colored urine.
• FDA pregnancy category X. This medication can cause birth
defects. Do not use rovustatin if you are pregnant. Tell your doctor
right away if you become pregnant during treatment. Use an effective
form of birth control while you are using this medication.
• It is not known whether rosuvastatin passes into breast milk
or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not take this medication without
telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
